WNBA: It Ain’t No Joke

I know you scoffed at the title.

“W-NBA? What’s that?”

“I had no idea it was still around!”

“Why would I care about a league of ugly lesbians who couldn’t beat a high school boys’ basketball team?”

It’s time to stop the hating, and more importantly, time to stop repeating these same tired and recycled jokes about the league’s ineptitude.  Maybe they were funny before, but at this point, ya playing yourself like Jeru Da Damaja.

Yolanda Griffith

Danny?

We get it.  Most — though certainly not all — of these ladies won’t win any beauty contests.  No argument there.  I was flipping channels the other day and caught the end of a Seattle Storm game.  For a second, I thought Danny Fortson found a new home…it turned out to be Yolanda Griffith (right).  I was slightly horrified, but look, over the years, we’ve managed to enjoy NBA games featuring Sam Cassell, Nick Van Exel, Shelden Williams….and, ugh, Keith Closs. Trust me, no one in the WNBA is that damn ugly.  In the end, they’re athletes who get paid to play the game, not swimsuit models for guys (and girls) to ogle.

Other lame comments come from out-of-shape ballers who insist that female players “suck.”  Listen to this douchebag who was denied a tryout with the Indiana Fever (um, that’s a WNBA team). Solange Seriously, read the story — I’ll wait.  If you agree with him, then first of all, get over yourself and stop sucking in your gut.  And second, we’ve all heard that crap before, so save it.  The WNBA is like Solange Knowles: sligthly less appealing than the more popular sibling, but still banging in all the right places.  In other words, good basketball is good basketball.  And besides, any WNBA team would destroy the Knicks in a full court game.  I know, that was too easy…but it’s the truth.

The stereotypes won’t go away any time soon, and most guys continue to think it’s a sin to like women’s hoops.  But believe it or not, the WNBA just wrapped up its 12th season.  Despite being marketed worse than the NHL (1pm games on Sunday, really?), the league isn’t not going anywhere.  It’s not a perfect product, and it can certainly use its share of improvements, some of which I’ll address at a later time.  In the meantime, do all of us a favor and find some new material.  Better yet, go pick up a basketball and practice that jumpshot before you get schooled by a 12-year-old girl.

Amen, brother. Amen. Whenever someone says, “I don’t like the WNBA”, I just say, “Guess you don’t like basketball, then?”

Nice Article, The sooner “basketball fans” accept the fact that men and women are different, the easier it’ll be for them to recognize the positives that both genders bring to the sport.
